Noise from neighbour's plumbing

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

We have moved into a property where we are experiencing loud noises from the neighbour's plumbing. A plumber has been round to take a look and believes that it is caused by the water tank in their loft being placed up against the adjoining wall of our two properties. I wanted to get a second opinion on whether the refilling of the water tank is likely to be the issue and if anyone is able to provide a rough idea as to how much moving a tank would cost and how long it would take. The neighbour's landowner is aware of the problem but seemingly unwilling to do anything about it whilst the current tenants are in contract. I wondered if that might be because it is a lengthy job that would leave them without water for some time. Many thanks for your thoughts.

this is probably water hammer caused by unclipped pipes or juddering ball vale, clip pipes fit an equilibrium ball valve.

Hi the most common with noise in pipe is pipes not bracketed properly or faulty diaphragm in your ball valve, which will cause it to shudder very loudly, changing a ball valve is a very quick fix taking about 30 mins, hope this helps

Whilst I agree with Pickwood, this may not in itself always cure the issue. It needs to be established that the supply pipe is properly secured too. Even then under certain circumstances you can get a wave oscillating back & forth within the tank which builds up causing the valve to open & close. This is usually where the water pressure is quite high & so a pressure reducing valve fitted to the supply pipe maybe needed. I do not agree with D&R Property suggesting an equilibrium valve be fitted, as they are plastic & due to the tank location there may be a risk of freezing. Hope that helps.

There are lots possibilities that could cause nice noice, it could also be some washers warned out, some pipes might be off the clips and would hammer, I would sealed the tank properly and insulated. So should be solved the problem.
