Painting a new wood step - what's best?!
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.53 PM
Hello! I recently had a window knocked out and French doors fitted. A new pine step (2 boards) were fitted to finish the new floor and get it to meet up neatly to oak flooring already fitted. My question is, what's best to finish this step? Its going to need to be hardwearing as it will be trodden on - so should I try to stain/varnish it to match the oak flooring, or paint it gloss white (as I intend to paint the rest of the woodwork in this room gloss). Any advice gratefully received!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Stephen. In my opinion it sounds like it would be best to match the step to the existing flooring. Having a white glossed step with high traffic is going to be a nightmare to keep clean and will dirt will be more noticeable. Also, with paint chipping etc. You'll have to re-paint it more then you'll have to re stain/wax it.
All the best

Hi all,
Painted wooden steps is a brilliant idea, simply because the finish will look beautiful,
I have the wooden steps in my flat painted because they look much better than carpet,I recently painted a customer 3 Bedroom flat , new wooden stairs,I will upload few pictures on my gallery and I can supply the customer contact on request.
First,I would sand down all the wood work, use hoover to suck up all the dust before I would apply first coat of wood primer paint.
Secondly,I would use wood filler to fill all the big holes ,screws holes ,sand down and use the hoover again to get rid of the dust before I would undercoat all the wood work starting from the top to bottom.
Third,I would use Polly filler to fill any nail heads and small holes, when dry,I would sand down ,make sure no dust left, then I would apply third coat of paint. This time ,it will be Floor paint, the color of your choice.
Forth, when every thing dry,I would cork all the gaps between steps, and between steps and skirting ,step by step and all the way down from top to bottom before I would apply the fourth coat of paint.
When everything is nice and dry,I would sand down lightly everything, use the hoover again,so no dust left ,then apply nicely and generously one more coat of paint to give the finishing a wonderful look.
You would love it I promise,
Kind regards,
Aziz

Without question match to the floor with a suitable woodstain. Do a test patch first of course on a spare piece of pine timber.
Alternatively you could use the existing steps as a pattern to new oak steps to match floor of course which will be a bit more expensive but will weather with floor.
Don’t get drawn into painting timber steps as this is a high traffic outside to Inside area and you will be a slave to it the minute it is completed endeavouring to maintain the finish

Hi,
In my opinion it depends on personal preference
Gloss is an exterior hard wearing paint and it is still widely use for exterior/interior wood trim o in terms of suitability would be definitely the good choice as providing great hard wearing protection
Hard wearing exterior varnish on top of stain or dye would be also suitable solution as designed for high traffic areas and also provides great hard wearing protection
Thanks
