Mysterious mould growth by capped/removed chimney breast

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.06 PM

Hi all, We appear to have black mould downstairs in the corner by the capped (removed below roof tiles) chimney breast, oddly we also have what looks like water staining/crystals/mould in the same appear on the first floor. House was redecorated and all but 1 internal vents were removed (other chimney breast is fine as this has the single internal vent). There is cracking of the external render but I have been told this will not effect nor let water in via the cavity, only other possibility is air bricks on the outside letting water in? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there if you have your chimney capped off you must vent the chimney stack at the bottom to let air flow to prevent damp penetrating.

The Black mould is caused by Damp this you can check with a protometer although part of the chimney has been removed Regards Chris By the way there is no cavity in a chimney

If chimney been removed under roof line. Open up the top to vent..as well.. but black mold not good and i would look for a leak in roof.

Vent at bottom and at the top this will allow air to flow
