grp roof laid over failed edpm roof now leaking!

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.05 PM

I had a new edpm roof installed. It was a shocking job; the EDPM was pulling apart around roof lanterns and was clearly not adhered to the OSB. It wasn't leaking but it wasn't going to be long. New roofer came and suggested over boarding the roof and installing a grp roof. He has done this ( it rained during installation) and now we have multiple leaks coming through joints in the OSB and leaking onto plaster on ceiling. It has been suggested that I cover the whole 'new roof' with acropol/cromopol or similar? Will this work or should i just insist the GRP is re-done?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

get the grp and the rubber roof removed and do the job again,if a grp is done properly it will never leak, cromopol is ok for temp repairs but not a long term solution

Hi Over boarding the EPDM can be done so the issue with the GRP will not be that, I would not recommend coating the GRP with Cromapol or Acropol as it with crack and lift over time, the GRP roof should be able to rework, sand back top coat carry out repairs with new fibre glass matting and bandaging and re coat with resin and new top coat. I would also recommend checking that all the flashing above up-stands and abutments of walls ect... are installed correctly. The best option would to be removing both grp and epdm and start.

That sounds an absolute shambles and embarrassment to the trade to say the least... I’d agree rip everything up and just start a fresh otherwise your adding a lot of weight to the ceiling joists etc. A rubber or GRP roof will last a long time providing they are installed correctly to manufacturer’s guidelines.

Take the whole roof off and start again. Don’t waste your money on cromapol . It’s only a temporary fix

Glassfibre should NEVER be laid in wet conditions. Water neutralises the catalyst used to harden the resin resulting in the mix staying wet which will not be water proof. My advice would be to remove the whole roof and get a competent GRP roofer to relay it. Always check the experience of a GRP roofer as there are many out there who are traditional roofers switching to GRP without the requisite experience.
