Windows & Door Fitting

The gap between window ledge and sill

Anonymous user 12 December 2019 - 2.26 PM

Hi can anyone tell me what the gap between a window ledge and sill should be on a outside wall, any help. Appreciated, recently had an extension built, with two windows in the same room, the gap on one is half an inch the other is 1 inch, also the only thing sealing this gap is expanding foam, is this acceptable?

UPVC window sills normally sit on top of the ledge, under the cill you will see drip mouldings these should be clear and showing so any water will drip away from the wall( if you have one at 1 inch and the other half just sounds like bad measuring during the build or by the window fitter and a cosmetic problem

For a good fit the gap should be within fractions of an inch - that is below 1/4" on sides and below 1" top If its more than that the windows were not measured correctely but it should not effect the performance of a window.Usually windows are Screwed into the walls and remaining gap would be covered with expanding foam or plaster IF* necessary and to cover the expanding foam we use upvc trims.Open one of the windows and see if you could see any screws going through the window frame into the wall if yes nothing to worry about if not call someone to come and fix the issue URGENTLY. If you had hired someone from this platform they must have fixed the screws i can guarantee that . Let us know the outcome . Good luck

The cill should ideally sit 2 inches over the brick work to ensure rain water clears the brickwork. Most cills are 150mm. If you only have half an inch clearance the cills really need to be changed to 180mm. Unfortunately this will mean the windows need to be taken out, new cill placed and then refit the windows.

I like to measure the windows as tight as possible, which is leaving a 10 mm around clearance which will leave a small gap between the window sill and the brick work so that it looks like a a nice neat finish
