Is this fence install faulty?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

I had new fencing and a garden gate installed less than 4 months ago. This morning one of the gates has completely blown off the hinges. The gate itself is about 10ft W by 7ft H. They have been hung on 9x9 wooden posts. The company I used fit the hinges on the edge of the post - was this the correct thing for them to do? There is a 5mm split where they have screwed the hinge into the post and are now denying the damage is down to poor workman ship.. any help or advice is appreciated, thanks.

Hello, The install does have its faults, the size of gate post is correct (maybe even too big but better than than small) it sounds as though the hinges used where not substantial enough for the task, hook to drive/ hook to bolt or hook to plate with 100mmx6mm screws or even better coach bolts would have been more suited to your needs. If the fencer you used has never dealt with a large gate as you have then he wouldnt know any better. Next time it's always better to see pictures of similar projects and even references to help you choose the right contractor for your projects. Konar

This sounds that the hinges used were not up to the task would of used a strong heavy duty hinges, poss as many as four and coach bolts to attach to posts and gates. Would have got photos of previous or similar installation to give you a better idea regards trevor

Hi seems that there are some faults with gates/ but the fence posts seem adequate for the job (better to be oversized). But the hinges should be heavy duty galvanised , these allow the plate to be screwed closer to the centre of the posts due to the offset on the crank of the hinge. I feel that this bad workmanship is down to lack of knowledge but would have him rectify the mistakes I hope this helps thanks Paul

I think use heavy duty hinges and strong screws. Kind regards, Matthew
