How can i lower my garage floor 2 feet to be level with the rest of the house?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

I want to turn my double garage on the side of the house into accomodation, but the floor level in the garage is around two feet higher than that of the house itself!! I would like to lower the floor, but not sure whether the structure or footings are deep enough in the garage to accomodate it Anyone got any ideas how could work? Could I just dig it out?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, standard footings are down approximately 1 meter deep depended on the ground conditions for houses and garages. So technically you could excavate down to this level without causing any structural problems as the garage load bearing walls/footing rest on the bottom of the ground. however you would have to damp proof back up to d.p.c level, on inside of the excavated walls, best to dig a trial hole and see how deep the existing footing go .good luck

If you have enough head room in the garage, it would probably be simpler to make 3 steps going down into the house. Alternatively you can excavate next to a wall inside the garage to enable you to view the footing

Dig a trial hole to expose foundations Then seek guidance with a structural engineer
