Plastering & Rendering

Hairline cracks all over wall which was plastered 8 months ago

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

Hi, I have just noticed, so must have happened in the last few weeks, that two walls (which join) in my dining room have hairline cracks all over them. The walls were taken back to brick, plasterboard put up and then plastered over. My question is, is this normal or should I get in touch with the builder (their work has a one year guarantee on it). We have had a bit of a cold snap recently and one of the walls in question joins onto a wall with a vertical radiator on it. Though weirdly that wall has no cracks on it. Also I have been away for a few days here and there so the house has been left to get cold and then gets warmed up again when I return home. Grateful for any advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi this is common it could be the plasterboards were damp when came from the merchants and know they are drying out so they will shrink and crack the plaster. Or to hot when plaster was dying out. Best thing apply a filler and send down .

Hi I would get in touch with the builders. It' could be the plasterboard that they put up is old or left out in open for a while. they lose the wax on the white side of the plasterboard and that's what stop the suction and plaster drying to quick hope this helps

Are the cracks in straight lines along the edges of the plasterboards? If yes, the boards have not been taped with skim prior to plastering. In case the cracks are at varying angles and interconnecting: Maybe the temperature was low during plastering and then the heating was turned up straightaway during the drying process. Plaster not properly bonded to the plasterboard. One should avoid uneven temperatures in the flat during and after plastering during winter months.

Ask the builder.. But its normal for plaster to settle shrink-Expand and cracks can develop, as long as its sound and not blown off the brick work it can be fixed easily next time you decorate
