Can I continue using a Potterton boiler dripping water from bottom?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

Today I noticed my Potterton Promax SL Range boiler has slow water dripping (various rate from 0 to 5 ml per hour). Because I cannot get a plumber to fix the problem quickly, I want to know if it is safe to continue using the heating and hot water system for a few weeks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dear youzhanghe. I do not think anyone will say it's okay to use a faulty boiler... but thank you for the question. Regards, Bob.

Good evening youzhanghe. Noticing a leak from your boiler is never a good thing, but you already knew that :) although it may seem like a small leak, it could be part of a bigger problem and could potentially go on to cause damage if left unchecked. Most modern day boilers are condensing boilers, the condensate traps on boilers are normally connected, somewhere down the line, to the flue system of the boiler. If this is the area where the leak is coming from, or if the trap were to become dislodged or dry up, then the harmful products of combustion could enter your property from the boiler. Where gas appliances are involved I would never advise anyone to take the risk and instead I would recommend that a gas safe registered engineer take a look at it as a matter of urgency to be on the safe side.
