Vitra V-Care Toilet – Malfunction and Broken Toilet Seat

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

Hi, Looking for some advice as we stayed in a holiday rental property over the weekend which had a Vitra V-Care toilet (totally excessive and unnecessary in a cheap rental!), and since returning home, we’ve now been accused of breaking it. The electric toilet seat opening and closing didn’t work when we arrived, it would only open the seat half way, and then went back down again. We therefore used the toilet seat manually all weekend, as we were told we could do, and had absolutely no issues using it this way. The owners are now complaining that there is a bit broken off the toilet seat (a small piece of plastic broken off the very back of the seat on the right hand side when standing in front of the toilet - down the side of the 'Vitra V-Care logo) which we must have caused by using excessive force, and that the toilet seat is no longer attached to the toilet. None of us caused that damage to the toilet, and we don’t even understand how that damage could be caused by just manually opening and closing the seat and lid as we did. We imagine that the motor to lift the seat up and down is located there, and so believe it must have broken as part of the electrical malfunction of the seat going up and down, perhaps it was getting stuck, which is nothing to do with us. Does anyone have any experience with these toilets, and have experienced this issue previously? Thanks so much in advance for your help! Thanks, Jack

Hi Jack. Wow! They are expensive aren't they. As it's a rental property and for use by paying clients this electrical equipment may need to be PAC tested / maintained each year to manufactures / landlord license requirements. May I suggest you ask to see a copy of the maintenance reports / receipts or find out if this is a requirement for rentals, etc. Could help your case in the event of being chased for damages and could cause an element of doubt as to it's road worthiness... allegedly. Law requires proof... not one persons word against the other. Anyway, it may have been the cleaner, allegedly. Regards, Bob. ;)

They will need to prove that you broke it so I would not worry to much. Also did you tell the property owner the seat was broken and what did they advise you to do. I.E use it manually. The answer is if it is not meant to open manually but was used that way it could have damaged it but with out it being looked at before you used it there is no way of telling. The property should have been cleaned a checked by the owner before you stayed if it was not there is no way of telling when it got broken. It sounds like the owner is trying there luck to get you to replace it but dont it's not you fault

If this is a property that is designed for renting out it must have a landlord and surely some sort of liability insurance
