Best way to Waterproof old coping Stones

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi we live in a mid terraced period stone house (built circa 1900) which has a single storey extension to the rear, the extension has a 'lean to' tiled roof with parapet walls either side. I'm looking at getting these parapet walls waterproofed and before we get some quotes in from mybuilder.com we wanted to know what the best solution for completing this job is ( most time, cost and quality effective). We have been told about fiberglass from a friend but don't know the ins and outs of the process and can't find much online. Is this the best way or are there better alternatives? any advice greatly appreciated. thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

A lead replacement flashing over the top of the coping stones would be suitable to waterproofing it

If it is fibre glass as in GRP where Matt strands and resin is used then it’s the best waterproofer out there. Very costly tho

Either lead or fibreglass both are expensive, both should last as long as each other at least 20 years. Even though lead has been known to last 50+ years fibreglass is a little temperamental if not installed correctly so if you go for this education yourself on the manufacturer specifications and only use CURE IT GRP brand it’s the more expensive out of all the brands but far better resin and they also helpfully list all specifications on there website. make sure who ever you hire knows them also as if they don’t follow them the fibreglass will crack or delaminate and leak. I think it comes down to what looks best and suits the house and area you live in and from what your describing I personally would go for lead, but you wanna make sure they use at least code 5 lead the thicker the better and make sure all internal and external corners are welded with a lead filler rod or properly bossed and dressed and not overly thinned if they are using traditional methods.
