Opinions on paying for no plumbing work done

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

Had a private company (that I now found dodgy) speak to me on the phone to arrange a dishwasher installation. Their 'sub-website' like a temporary website for my local area states that I should pay the plumber on completion of the work. The plumber arrives and states that he doesn't have the parts and calls his manager. Me and the plumber agree that we should re-arrange another day where he can obtain some parts for the job. The company calls whilst the plumber is with us and demand £135 (the job), or as they say the "minimum hourly rate". however the plumber only came in for 2-3 minutes looked at the pipes and said I can't do it today. The plumber himself agreed that £135 is too much for no work being done or nothing. I however offered the plumber to pay for the petrol and maybe his time (max £20-30). The plumber had refused the money and said he didn't want to take money from us for nothing. However his company, were insisting I pay for the 'job'. The plumber had left and apologised and we apologised for the mix up to the plumber. However on the phone I spoke to the manager and were saying they'd escalate the situation, because it is how their company operates. The guy promised that on the day the dishwasher will be installed, and said that it isn't their fault that the pipes aren't' there and that I should've told them. However, I'm know nothing about plumbing, and it's like a car mechanic telling me I should've known car parts before giving it. - when i rang the number on their website another company picked up claiming 'they manage it'. (should've been a red flag). - Their website states I should pay on completion of the work. However no work was completed or even attempted. Honestly i've seen videos where plumbers don't get paid for their hard work, however literally the guy came, looked at the sink and said he can't do it today. Is that worth £135? - Also plumber had arrived with no equipment, just a phone, maybe this is standard procedure to check first but just worth noting. thanks just need some opinions on it, who is in the wrong in this case?

Don’t pay fir a job that hasn’t been done. It’s up to them to appraise job, then give you a price for work to be done Then up to you wether you go ahead or not. Shady operation to be sure, get a good plumber on ‘my builder’ with good feedback rating!

you really have to ask your self how he was going to fix anything with just a phone, bad practice, bad company, you dont turn up at any job without at the very least tools. personally I would not even have offered him petrol money probably directions to the nearest job center as he needs to change jobs. good luck Alex

So let them take you to small claims court. It will take ages and the judge will just laugh at them, then they will have lost their costs as well. Fools.
