Installing a Hive Thermostat

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

Im just wondering if it is legal for me to install a Hive thermostat myself (not an electrician/plumber), I currently have a Wireless Salus Programmable thermostat, the receiver is wired to the boiler, and I'm thinking of just changing that one with the Hive one. Is it legal for a DIYer to do this, would there be any warranty/insurance issues? Thanks G

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi This is your boiler and your house (presuming you are not a tenant) and that being so you can do what you indicate above, whether you "should be" doing it is another question, in the circumstances I would presume you feel qualified to ajudge you have the technical capabilities to make it all work and to understand all the risks involved etc, that is your decision. The issue of insurance is between you and an insurer, if applicable, but they are rightly risk adverse and I would bet they infer such work should be done by a competent tradesman. Your call.

Hi, If you feel competent enough and feel you have the knowledge to install it safely and correctly, then their isn’t much issue. But it’s entirely your choice.

Hi, Any work that requires an individual to instal anything to do with electrical or and mainly gas it’s never authorised if the person does not have qualifications. Weather it’s their property or not it’s not only you, you putting at risk it’s probably your neighbour(s) If you read the instructions it tells you that it must be installed by a qualified engineer.

You should be competent. It's up to you whether you deem yourself as such. Many traders are not deemed competent - for example I am registered electrician but can not touch gas ( I can wire heating controls). If you wire a thermostat wrong in some boilers ( wire in wrong place) you could blow the PCB and have no heating.
