What boiler / central heating care is needed after fixing a pipe leak?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi, I found a leak in the CH system; a leaking pipe under the floorboards that has now been fixed. Through this time, water has been filled into the system several times. Is there specific boiler/CH care that is needed moving forward? Power flush? Inhibitor? Descaling? Also, my hot water doesn't heat up beyond the first 3 of 6 lights when using the shower and on many occasions the boiler flame turns on and off on a regular basis while showering. Is it a scale problem for the primary heat exchanger? I've already replaced the secondary heat exchanger. If scale issue, how would I descale the primary heat exchanger? Some addn'l details: The boiler is a Ariston Microgenus 23 MFFI combi and the shower is a thermostatic one. We had another leaking radiator a year ago when we had to top the system many times, and inhibitor was never added. thank you in advance. Best, Ananth

Perhaps to help with a diagnosis it would help if you posted make and model of boiler and what type of shower you are using If an inhibitor has been in the system along with a filer you should have little trouble with sludge etc Yes your system needs inhibitor as you would have lost most of it in the system as it has been topped up so many times Await further info as above As you have a thermo static shower the boiler will only supply water at the temperature required so when this temperature is reached boiler will turn off for a while until the water temperature in the boiler reduces and then will fire up again this is normal.operation

Dear Ananth. Thank's for posting your question. Sure an inhibitor should be added if that is what is required by the boiler manufacturer / installer. Regarding the shower / boiler turning on and off. Try this... get a larger shower rose (head) and open it up for a full shower flow... not a tight fast stream jet. Also, A high flow shower hose which has an internal diameter of at least 10mm will deliver more water with very little pressure loss compared with a small bore shower hose (typically 8mm). It may be that the boiler is correctly turning off because there is not enough water flow and the internal sensor is saying... "too hot stop the heat". Sometimes, it's simple. Regards, Bob.
