Loft Conversion

Velux or similar Loft Rear Windows.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

I am having my pitched roof retiled soon & wondering whether to fit 3 rear facing loft windows ( one as a fire exit) when the retiling is taking place or better before or after this retailing & will I need a local council’s planning permission to have them fitted and if i want a loft conversion done, would it be better to get the roof retiling done before, during or after this loft conversion with an external spiral or straight aluminium staircase from the existing concrete staircase leading to 1st.floor flats. Thank U.

It would be better to get them fitted and the roof re-tiled whilst your doing the loft conversion as you may have to do structural work to the roof when doing your loft. When you do your loft conversion you need a fire escape route down to the front door,so you don’t necessarily need an escape window in the loft.

Hi, You may need planning permission with the conversion. You will need building regulations approval. I would get the rooflights and tiling done at the same time. The loft conversion will require a structural floor. Thanks, James.

In Scotland you need an accessible egress window or roof light in each new bedroom in the loft that you are converting. Roof windows can go in at the same time as retiling the roof after any other repair or structural works.

It would be recommended to install the Velux windows at the same time as the loft conversion if your are serious about a full loft conversion. However, you will need to apply for planning permission for your loft conversion and detail the 3No. Velux windows in your plans at the same time.
