What can I do, when I am a customer and the tradesman just ignores me

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

Had external of property painted and decorated, three bed end terrace. This was two weeks ago....however, painting not finished. Painted window sills , that is now flaking, he used rendering paint ? Cracks on paintwork, , house was rendered by previous owners. Paint on walls now flaking, down pipes covered in paint . Caulking not used under the fascia. Step paint used, all disappeared , except smallest patches. When I pointed this out , I got he has been a painter and decorator for 25 years .....What can I do , as I am fed up with his lack of concern or pride in his work ? Still have his ladders etc on my property and not paid all monies to him .

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Although external painting when winter is here is not ideal , it sounds to me the correct steps wasn’t followed , like priming areas , stabilising to chalky surface, and using correct paint for exterior work .

As a company that specialises in external wall coatings its clear to me that the external wall surfaces was not prepared properly before being primed.Rendering paint ? never heard of it unless he was referring to something like Sandtex or weathershield which are water based paints and should not be used if there is a chance of frost or freezing temperatures that day. ( this would result in cracking or flaking paint within a few days ). A professional painter would have removed the down pipes or masked them up and used a solvent /pliolite /alkyd based paint during the winter months instead of a water based product. Try to speak to your painter to resolve the situation and get him to put things right using the correct materials. If still no joy then give him notice of your intentions of getting it done again by another company and will present him with the bill.

Take it easy would be my way of thinking. Try the polite approach rather than hot headed as you want answers. Ask him outright and air your concerns. Maybe express that you are not keen on parting with any more money until its up to scratch to what was agreed at the beginning of the job.

external work this time of year is a bad idea as there is too much moisture in the air and things don't dry properly hence the cracks and flaking. Ask him back and say you'll take further action if no response.

you can check with an insurance company if he done damage to your property. if you have invoice for the work that he done that should be pretty easy.

He's used masonry on the sills and hasn't primed them the weather won't help but you should definitely prepare in the correct manor. The down pipes should have been wrapped if there pre finished. Give him a email and ask him to have a look at the work for himself.
