Can I convert a 2 wire thermostat to a smart thermostat
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.52 PM
I currently have a 2 wire thermostat (Horstmann Drt2 230v) set up. There are 2 black wires connected to the stat and one unused yellow wire. It controls one electric heater and nothing more.
It recently stopped working and I'd like to replace it with a cheap smart thermostat (£30-£40). I know nothing about wiring and compatability and have found it difficult to research online as there's so much conflicting info out there.
Do I require a 3A, 5A or 16A? What do these mean?
What do I need to look for /avoid?
Want to make sure I don't waste money and/or blow the house up.
Thanks in advance,
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
If your electric heater is 3 KW you will need a 16 A thermostat most smart thermostats work on a battery so two black wires are only switching the heater on and off so no problem

Hi there,
It really does depend on the model of thermostat you are replacing with. I would personally download the PDF brochure and confirm whether your thermostat is compatible with your current wiring set up. If you are not sure then enlist the services of a qualified electrician/heating engineer.
Some smart stats need a 240volt supply and then works by radio link this can be fitted to your old stat providing it can be re wired to suit
I dont think you could switch a 16amp water heater from the stat
Firstly as this is connected to a mains electrical circuit you should employ a suitably qualified electrician
Looking at the instructions for the previous thermostat it also programmable therefore the new one will have to be as well unless you intend to just make the heater temprature operates

Yes you can, Smart thermostat is wireless so that wires would have to be disconnected and receiver wired in to the boiler.
