Removing tiles from plasterboard

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

I want to replace the tiles in my bathroom and toilet but the existing tiles have been laid on plasterboard as this is a new build property. Can I remove them safely? Or can I tile over them?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, In my experience you will damage the boards beyond repair. You could tiles over exsisting ,make sure to give tiles a light sand and apply primer. Also this will give you a rather large seen edge . Best practice is to strip and replace damaged boards. Thanks Craig

Personally I wouldn’t tile over old tiles, one being it wouldn’t be a professional job and two the weight ratio on the plasterboard wall could end up pulling the old tiles off anyway depending how the old job was done previously. Always go back to the sub wall / frame and start again, like mentioned above use aqua board in wet areas and makes sure the joins are sealed and boards primed before tiling over again.

Take tiles off with plasterboard and replace with hardie backer board or aqua panel boards in wet areas and plasterbord the rest if bathroom fully tiled than tank the joints in the wet area never tile over tile and always use powder adhesive as well never tub stuff.

As Gavin has said really. The tiles will,if put up properly come off with the plaster board. You need to replace the plaster board with hardie or aqua boards in the wet areas, ie the shower, then seal the joints and tile over.

Personally I wouldn't tile over tiles. Take off and start again. Worst case prepare to replace plasterboard aswell in case its damaged in the removal of the old tiles.
