Insulation

Insulating under a beam and block floor

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Hi, We moved into a 'new' house ( as an estimate I'd say built on the mid 60's) and we've had new carpet and laminate put down during the summer. Now we've hit winter the floor is freezing cold. We have a beam and block floor (which isn't something I've ever really come across) and am finding conflicting information about whether insulating underneath is ok or not. I really don't want to have to take up our new carpet and flooring to insulate and screed on top. Any advice would be much appreciated. *Update* There is a dpm and fiber board insulation under the laminate and dpm and underlay only under the carpet but both floors are freezing. I'm hoping not to take the laminate or carpet back up so was wondering if I could insulatate underneath the beam and block like it was wooden joist and chipboard flooring? There's a good 900mm crawl space so I have room. However, I read somewhere that insulating underneath would cause moisture build up which would corrode the beams and eventually cause them to fail. Again any advice to this would be much appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Usually with a block and Beam floor it has dpm on first then an insulated layer and floor boards on top. it’s basically a floating floor then you put your floor coverings etc on top

Hi. After installing bison beams with block. The joints of the blocks are usually filled with a cement liquid. A DPM or in our area a Radon Barrier is installed, after that 100-150mm of Celotex or a similar product is laid with a sand & cement or liquid screen or as above a timber floating floor. The problem you have now is that you haven’t already had the floor laid with insulation is that your new floor after fitting insulation is going to be 100-150mom higher which I’m assuming will be no good. Should have been done on installation of beam/blocks. Hope this helps Aaron Hay Construction
