What causes trv's to leak?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Hi, I had a problem last year where two of my trv's were leaking, and the rest were showing signs of starting to leak around the pin, so I had to replace them all. They were only a few years old. I asked the person who fitted them today and he said it was caused by turning them on/off, up/down too often. They are designed to be set and just left otherwise frequent turning will cause the grease in them to dry out and they will leak. Is this true, because I want to be able to turn them off or down when I go out in the morning just leaving the bathroom radiator on for a few hours to dry my towel, and have a few turned up to maximum at the week-end to dry clothes. I don't really want to have some radiators on when I'm out particularly the lounge one which is huge. It just seems such a waste. Many thanks, Simon

No turning them on and off should not cause them to leak any sooner than not touching them. the pin moves up and down regardless as they automatically regulate the flow themselves to a radiator to a set temperature. when replacing, make sure a good quality brand is used, there not particle much more in price and probably work out cheaper overall as they should not need to be replaced for a couple of decades if functioning correctly.

Check the pressure of the system. If you have a combination boiler when water in the system gets warm the pressure increases. Usual pressure is 1.5baršŸ‘

contract valves do not last, but even the most expensive ones can leak,as they wear with expansion and contraction.
