What do I need to replace/buy/sort out in order to get a shower with good to great water pressure that has more than two temperatures?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

I just bought a house built in 1900. The water system is a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard in our bathroom and it is about 1-2ft lower than the shower head if that. We went to turn the shower on one day and the low pressure sign came on the shower and it has not worked since. Before the shower went, we were having issues with the temperature and pretty poor water pressure. It was either ice cold or burning hot. PLEASE HELP! PS my brother in law is a plumber- i just feel bad constantly asking him for help.. so it would be great if I could just tell him what to fix :) Shan

Sounds like you have an instantaneous electric shower fitted there. Best way but costly is to use a thermostatic mixer valve and supply this from either a combination gas boiler, i.e. mains pressure hot and cold water. Or alternatively have a pump. The pump option has the drawback in that it can only pump the stored hot water in your hot water cylinder so will run out pretty quickly. Best bet is get a plumber in to advise and provide some free quotes.

Sounds like you have a blockage on the shower supply pipe. As an electric shower only needs a cold feed it should have been piped from a mains supply pipe. If there is a blockage restricting the flow of water you will get a low pressure light on and the temp will be up and down. I would check the shower to see if any debris has come up though the pipe there should be a little metal gauze in the inlet to stop it entering the shower. Or it could have been piped wrong in the first place could the installer have pipe it to the hot feed by mistake.because that would give the same problems. Hope this helps Chris
