Electric Shower Removal - Can I just fit a standard plug socket to the cable?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.05 PM
So I have an unused shower room downstairs & I'm going to remove the electric shower & turn it into a utility space for the washing machine & tumble dryer. Might be a completely daft question but can I simply remove the shower unit & re-fit the electric cables to a standard double plug socket to power the washing machine/tumble dryer? Or like most things is it not this simple? Thanks for the replies guys,. Sounds like time to call the sparky in! Cheers

It's not that straight-forward.
The cable for the shower is likely to be 6mm or 10mm T&E, plus it would be on its own circuit and therefore protected by a 40a - 45a MCB/RCBO.
There will also be a shower isolator switch somewhere which would need to be removed.
Sockets are designed to accept 2.5mm and/or 4mm cables so you would find it a challenge to fit 6mm in the terminals. If you did you wouldn't be able to wire in a second socket as there is simply no room in the terminals.
Then you would need to drop the MCB/RCBO down to 32a as you now have a socket radial circuit.
An option would be to turn the circuit into a sub-distribution circuit.

My advise is to ask an electrician, best to fine out the watts and volts for the shower and the same with the washing machine and dryer. You need to know this so the cables don't over heat and short circuit.
Hope this is helpful

Showers are usually run on a 30amp fuse, I think you would need a qualified electrician to help you with this.
Hope this is some help.

Yes you can .you can terminate the shower in the junction box with min 50A connector which has to be accessible for inspection.from there you can go with ,2.5 tween and earth..change the mcb in consumer unit to 20A change the label from shower to utility room sockets. And make a note for the location of junction box
