Can I have an open fire?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.05 PM
I have moved into a house with an open fireplace in living room. It has a flue liner tube. Can I just ho ahead and have an open fire with smokless fuel or do I need other work done?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi the flue liner must be removed prior to having a fire

It sounds like the flue is for an old gas fire so it would need to be removed and the existing brick flue smoke tested before you should use it with any solid fuel.

Hello Jessica,
In an older property, your chimney doesn’t have to be lined to meet building regulations. An inspection by a chimney professional will tell you if you need to have it lined for safety purposes.
A chimney liner may be necessary in an older property if the flue inside your chimney is no longer safe to use. A CCTV inspection carried out by a chimney professional will clearly show the condition of your flue.
Best to be safe than sorry

Defiantly not the chimney needs to be brought back to its original state inspected and cleaned and any repair work done
