Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

Hi Thanxs for reading. I was tryna be a hero n paint over the red splashback in our kitchen. But i used a matt white, which i painted about 3 or 4 times. Seemed like the red disappeared and job was a gud 'un. No. Today i was cooking summit n splashed some food onto the wall and i started to wipe it but the paint just peeled off. I also noticed quite a few cracks on the wall. Im sooo sad coz ive done The whole kitchen white and the rest is fine, just the splashbacks messing about. Please, any help would be very appreciated. Thank you soooo much.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

When painting vinyl matt over silk there are some preperation steps ( always is in decorating) I lightly key the surface using 120 or 180 grit sandpaper. And then wash the surface with sugar soap solution then clean water rinse. I would guess that your main problem is with the splashback areas as these are more likely to have had contaminants, this has prevented the paint from adhering

An even easier way to solve it is to use Zinsser B.I.N 123 primer and sealer. One coat and then it's ready for top coat's.

I kind of agree with the above comment. The splash back area could of had some kind of grease on it from cooking. I would personally of washed it down with sugar soap and then used a different paint just in that area as matt is not good for places you need to wipe down! Maybe try giving the splash back area a good sand down, wash with sugar soap then re paint using a kitchen paint that can be wiped down.

Assuming the splash back was a wall and not a vinyl laminate splash back. It would need washing with sugar soap, sanding with appropriate paper and priming with zinsser bullseye. Then two coats of good quality matt paint but preferably a washable matt. If it's a vinyl laminate splashback and not wall it would need washing, sanding with 180 gritt paper and a multi surface paint applied but I wouldn't recommend painting a laminate surfaces if you are looking for a long lasting durable finish.

all the answers were good but cover stain or any water based sealer will get you started at the beginning you will always get that crackle effect with vinyl and matt stain blocks your answer

Zinsser b.i.n and 123 are two different products One is shellac the other water base .. but both good products Yes there could of been grease on the wall wich wasn’t cleaned off , but painting over silk isn’t good unless the prep is done properly. Zinsser have a paint product to cope with whole areas called gaurdz

For splashbacks I always wash the area with a kitchen cleaner(degreaser). then sugarsoap wash it. Once rinsed and dried I then seal it with Zinsser Primer/sealer. Once the sealer has dried its ready for the colour.
