Mist coat on new plaster has left dusty residue

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

I’ve put another mist coat on at a 50/50 ratio. Less dust (paint?) is coming off but there is still some. I don’t know if this is from the first wrong coat as I removed as much as I could so now don’t know whether I should do another mist coat before painting?! If I paint it properly and it’s still dusty I’ll cry!!!! Help! I’ve had my living room plastered and applied a mist coat of 2/3 water and 1/3 emulsion. It seemed fine but when i run my hand over the walls my hand is left white which I assume is the paint?? I left the plaster 2 weeks before doing this but don’t know what to do before I start painting. Do I need to do more mist coats? Did I do the wrong ratio? Scared I’ve ruined it already!! Help! Thank you

The mist coat is only used to fill in the microscopic hole that are in the surface of a new skim. So don't worry about any surface residue that comes off on your hand. As long as the mist coat was of a milky consistency it will do its job. Without the mist coat fill these tiny holes a roller loaded with thick emulsion would pass over the skim filling the holes then the next time the roller passes over that area the thick emulsion would most likely pull off the top skim.

My advice would be do a 50/50 mist coat which should give some body. Once dry it shouldn't come off n your hands. Then paint using good quality emulsion. You haven't mucked it up just diluted it a bit too much so it's very weak. Hope this helps

Hi. The ratio is wrong. Ive seen a lot of people on here and elswhere quoting to use this type of ratio, but where are they when it goes wrong? There are many factors that influence the dilution the main one being the paint you are using. Paint for new plaster is the best to use or a contract matt. These often require little dilution and it will be stated on the tub. The dusty residue you should wipe off with damp cloth or sponge, don't worry if that means you are back to bare plaster, it needs to be removed as it will interfere with any subsequent paint applied. Once fully dry then re-mist coat with my above advice as a guide. Edit. What paint are you using for the mist coat?

I dont know but possibly the plaster finish was too polished which has stopped the paint sinking in perhaps a light sand over and re mist coat This is what I think without seeing hope this helps Nick
