Mixer Washout - Hazardous Waste?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
I have read recently that the wet cement that you wash out of your mixer/wheel barrow is classed as hazardous waste. It is to do with the PH of the cement being highly Alkaline. If this leaks into the watercourse it can have a detrimental effect on wildlife etc. Does anyone know how to best deal with this? I can see how on large sites this could be dealt with by containing the washout etc. But what about smaller builders? Do we risk being fined by the EA?

You can hire a small skip and line it with visqueen to keep it contained. Then it can be disposed of properly.

Any water left in the mixer gets tipped into a barrow the next morning the water from the Barrow gets slowly tipped into a bucket the majority of the chemicals and cement has solidified the water can be used straight back in the mixer the old mortar gets tipped onto a designated rubble area for later removal

Never ever let mixer washout slops go down a drain
Put bricks or broken blocks in the mixer with Limited water let the mixer spin for fifteen minutes by then you will have a wet slurry tip it into a wheelbarrow that is lined with heavy duty plastic the next day this will be semi cured and can be extracted from the barrow easily by turning the barrow upside down onto a sheet of plastic it will fall out in chunks and then load it into builders rubbish bags
Give the mixer a hose out with the mixer inverted over a bucket

Cleaning the mixer can make a lot of mess. To be honest I don't know about all the different chemicals. Tip it your wheelbarrow or carefully into a bucket. Then tip into a builders skip. Making sure you haven't any holes .
