Advice on painting brand new intricate plaster cornice

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

We have brand new intricately decorated plaster cornice and ceiling roses. (It has been installed for more than a year - yes a long peoject!) Finish will be Little Greene Absolute Matt emulsion for ceiling, rose, cornice and wall down to picture rail. Should the cornice be mist coated similar to walls and ceiling? Should this be done with brush or airless spray gun? My concern is that the thinned paint will easily drip and develop "nodules" as it seeps out of all the nooks and crannies of the cornice? Similar concerns about the final coats. We want to retain the detail. Thanks in advance for any advice. Andy

You basically answered your own question. If you spray it with multiple fine coats then it won’t run and drip. If you lather paint onto it... it will run and drip. As an apprentice I was alwasys taught that 2 thin coats is always better than one thick coat.

A good airless spray will give an effortless seamless finish. Either that or use a brush and stipple away for hours

For that kind of work i would use a hvlp sprayer as detailed use a mistup coat in it or zinnser bulls eye 1 2 3 primer works great

I recently finished a project down in nottingham doing 21 apts with detailed cornice. The cornice was white so 2 coats of matt emulsion sufficed. If you are using colour just do the same. I just brushed it in, but you could also use a spray system. I wouldnt thin the paint down to avoid dripping. Kit Cooper.

I would dust the cornice off thin down with a little bit of water and start painting checking for runs as you go along when dry put another coat on without thinning down and repeat the process for your final coat.
