Lime plaster under tiles and behind kitchen cupboards?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM
Hi I’m having old blown damp gypsum plaster removed from single brick and stone house and replaced with lime plaster but do I really need to take out good kitchen and tiles on party wall as don’t believe issues that I’m aware of there? It would save a lot of time and expense if just plastered the walls we can get to easily? Thanks (1880s mid terrace house Buckinghamshire)

I would take out all of it as lime plaster will have to breath

In this instance personally I would invest in having a damp survey done first to investigate the kitchen and party wall areas if they show no traces of damp then replace what is needed to be replaced rather than replacing it all as it may not require replacing.

I think the your, right Don’t fix what’s not broken, especially in such an old property, if it’s lasted a long time leave it alone of course there no guarantees it will not cause a problem in the future but I would take that chance

I would go for a damp meter survey. Take the back out of one of the kitchen units under the work top to see condition of walls or if no units take off skirting or one tile at bottom. You can actually hire a damp meter to check this yourself
