Insulation

Sound proofing on top of floorboards

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.39 PM

Hi there, We live on the second floor in a Victorian conversion, the flat below in very noisy. The floorboards are bare at the moment but wooden flooring will be laid on top. Before we put them down we would like to put some sound proofing on top of the floorboards. One tradesman has recommended putting warmup boards on top of the floorboards and then laying the flooring on top of this. Is this a good solution? We are looking for something very effective that will take away noise as best as possible. Does anyone have any other advice/recommendations? Any help would be great.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

To reduce the noise from below you would need insulation with density. Quilt is OK but the reduction is low. Pugging is the best between floor joist BUT IS HEAVY. Hush UK has researched sound insulation and come up with various joisted structures. The nearest to your situation is Hush System 1. Contact them with your floor details and they will come up with a system. Bear two things in mind the hush pugging will add 80kg/sq m and you need to get this checked by a structural engineer. Secondly they will suggest resilient quilt on the joists which will raise the floor level. But this is for impact sound from you as opposed to airbourne sound from the people below. The people below may well have lighting cut into the ceiling and this would need to be taken into account as any insulation could cause their lights to overheat. Finally, any air gap in the ceiling layer or voids in your joists will mean an easy path for sound. This is a difficult one and a lot of research and discussion with neighbours will be necessary.

Hi Nikki, The best should be lifting the boards and in the cavity between your floor and neighbor ceiling put Rockwool acoustic 150-200mm. And once the boards are back to place and before put the wood flooring, lay rubber based acoustic underlay before the new wood floor. I hope this helps Emanuel

The best way to do it is as emanson has said.you could lay a double layer of sound blocker membrian over your floor boards before the flooring underlay.it will help a little.
