Central Heating

Do I need two mains supplies for a new Worcester boiler install and only one for a Baxi?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

Good evening, I have a question about an old y-plan central heating installation dating back to 2000. I have an old Gloworm micron 50ff boiler situated in the consumer unit cupboard. However, it is connected to the wiring centre situated in the hot water cupboard 6 meters away via 3 wires, switched live, neutral and earth. I also have an old Grundfoss pump connected into the wiring centre that has only 4 wires, Blue, orange, brown-white, and grey, (I notice new pumps have 5 wires). The pump also has 3 settings using 40,65 & 95 watts. I also have 3 port mid-position valve, room stat, hot water stat and 2 channel programmer, (all from a Danfoss heatshare pack). Due to limited access in the consumer unit cupboard it seems I am limited to an engineer fitting either a Worcester greenstar ri series boiler or a Baxi ecoblue advance. Looking at the wiring diagrams, with my limited understanding, does fitting the Bosch require separate mains supplies in each cupboard, one for the boiler and one for the wiring centre, and will my pump kill the boiler using an extra 5 watts as the boiler is rated at 90 watts, and could I still use it with only 4 wires or would I need a new pump fitted too. Or would it be better to go for what appears to be the simpler option of the Baxi as it requires no pump overrun or permanent live and looks as though it is fed with just live, neutral and earth from the wiring centre as I have now. Sorry about the long question, and as usual, many thanks in advance. Simon.

You are overcomplicating things. The Baxi doesn't require the 4th wire, the Worcester does. There is an rf device that takes the place of the 4th wire if running a new one isn't an option. Its as simple as that. The installer can install whatever you want. It's an easy issue to overcome. The Baxi is a better boiler anyway

This is requirement 1. Worcester Must have 5 cores cable 1.1 Earth 1.2 Neutral 1.3 Live 1.4 Switch live connect to 3 ports valve orange 1.5 Pump over-run (connect this to pump Live) 2. Baxi Ecoblue Minimum 3 cores cable 2.1 Earth 2.2 Neutral 2.3 Switch Live connect to 3 port valve orange 2.4 Live (Optional) 2.5 Pump over-run (Option) connect to pump Live However if you want this boiler to last longer then I would suggest to do 5 cores on this.

This is far too complicated when unecessary. You mention 4 wires yet u have 5 as described for a y plan mid position. However none of this is relevant once u have a new boiler. its so easy to change to what ever boiler and plan you install or what ever thermostat you use. No need to complicate

These are things you shouldn't be worried about. Ask your experienced engineer. You can fit whatever you like the only concern you have is cost, they're wireless options for pump overun. My concern for you is you'll end up with a bad engineer who does things to appease you, because you have done all this overthinking. It may scare away good engineers that'll think you'll question their expertise instead of taking their years of advise. Ask questions, but don't undermine and when you hire the right person trust them to have done this for a long time.
