Hi Exposed wiring is not good practice but it is acceptable to have cables clipped direct. depending on the level of fault protection . Separation of gas installation pipework from the electrical installation At least 150mm away from electricity supply equipment' such as metering equipment, main service cut-outs or supplier (main) isolation switches and distribution or consumer boards At least 25mm away from electrical switches, sockets and electricity supply and distribution cables

BSEN 7671 prohibits basic insulation (single layer) being visible outside an enclosure. However, doubly insulated conductors such as supply tails are permissible, albeit that the point about clipping is well made. If basic insulation is visible this would likely constitute a C3 or FI violation. If, on the other hand you can see bare copper showing this is potentially much more serious. Exposed live parts is a C1 violation that requires immediate remedial action! Either way contact a registered electrician without delay.

The term "exposed wiring" has definitively negative connotations and must be accurately appropriated. Even terms like cables and wires are not interchangeable ones and have different definitions. Is the cable/wire single insulated or sheathed? In addition to types of cables/wires there is the method of installation that comes into the equation too. The method "clipped direct" allows for cables to be "on show" or visible at least. A picture of the cables in question would probably suffice in allowing an electrician to provide a correct and accurate answer to your question.
