Internal soil vent in middle of terrace

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Hi I’ve recently bought a two bed 1960s terrace. There is a soil vent pipe (cast iron I think) that runs vertically through the house but is approximately 1 metre from the wall. It’s currently sitting in a cupboard on ground floor - limiting extending the kitchen. It’s in a cupboard in a bedroom which takes a large chunk of space I’d like to claim back from the bathroom. Ideally I’d like to move the pipe so it’s neatly against the wall? Is it likely to be outrageously expensive to move it? Could it be rerouted / reduced in size above the toilet inflow? (Looks 110mm diameter top to bottom) Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

4 inch cast iron, yes you could move it back to wall, take it out put back in, in plastic if you are not going to dig up drain, you will need to use bends at floor level to move it back, use 135 bends if you can,but put access pipe in above them incase it blocks at a later date, you can reduce pipe size above highest fitting,i have seen it done in 50mm,but would recommend 75mm.

The previous answer is a correct way of doing the works so can be done like this but there are other options as well. If the GF is a suspended timber floor, adaption can be done below the joists and moved to the external wall. If this is not the only SVP, and you have another SVP externally you can remove all the pipe to vent above the toilet and install an AO ( air omittance) valve to the stack within the bathroom behind a duct if you have a back to wall pan. Hope this helps out.

This can be moved cost is all dependent on what’s happening below ground level replace in plastic 110mm generally orange pipe below ground black above more than likely the foul smell will escape at the top above the roof so I wouldn’t recommend you reduce the pipe

Yes remove and throw away, replace with 110mm plastic fitted tight in corner, use 135 bends at ground level as 90's will block up. you will also require expanding connectors were the cast meets the plastic, or if timber suspended floor do the joints. You will need to wrap the plastic pipe in insulation prior to boxing in to reduce the sound when water is falling down the pipe. Remove a section of pipe at ground level and cover hole first so any debris falling from above doesn't go into the pipe below ground and cause a blockage, Don't reduce pipe size above Wc it'll only restrict the air flow required.
