Steaming off thick paint on wooden door

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

We have just bought a house with lovely 1930's style doors. Taking the handles and plates off discover theres numerous coats of paint on the door, the top one beinf really thick and plastic like. Can we use a wallpaper steamer to aid getting this off or are we better sanding it?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. Steamer won't remove the paint. Sanding notionally will, but will mean a lot of work and dust and sanding sheets even if using an electric sander. Getting doors dipped has always been the more viable option Or have a go stripping the coatings yourself, 'chemical' strippers are a lot better now than they used to be

If you're going to repaint the doors rather than keep them as natural wood, you can use a heat gun but do use a protective mask when you do it in case of lead in the paint. The risk of doing it this way is you may scorch the wood. As said already, dipping is probably the best idea if you have a lot - last person I know who had it done paid about £15 per door but you'd need to check with local trades that do it.

The safest option would be steamer with sharp window scraper, if this fails then a heat gun might be worth a go but try not to scorch the wood, I have also used a product call 'colron furniture stripper, strong stuff can be purchased from bnq goggles gloves and mask must be worn also follow directions on back of tin.... Good luck

A chemical strip would be the most effective, also a heat gun and scraper works well
