How much weight can I safely add to a wall

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hello. I am looking to add sound proofing panels to my party wall in the living room and dining room in a 1930's semi-detached. My concern is how do I know how much weight the walls can safely take? The panels are 29kg per square metre and they are held in with hammerfix screws, straight to the brickwork through the existing plaster. It's a solid brick wall - not a cavity wall - and the alcoves that I am covering are 2.6 square metres each. That is about 76kg added to each alcove. Is this amount of weight something I'd need a structural engineer for? And is it something that would require a party wall agreement? Thanks so much for your help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes you will be ok fixing to the walls and alcove and no you don't need a structure engineer report

Hi there, you have basically answered the question in your last sentence, if you are going to do the sound proofing all above board you would need to use the party wall act. This is unless you built a studwork wall in front of the party wall creating a cavity and not fixing to the party wall which would overcome the party wall act part, but in turn this would then lead to the question, can the floor take the weight of the studs and sound proofing panels? Which you would either need a structural engineer or a qualified tradesman to look at the job advise you. Hope this helps, Kind Regards Andy

stud allows a fixing to the wall ceiling and floor spreading the weight!

Advisable also to get party wall consent from neighbour especially if the wall is single skin
