Hello, can sbr sealant be painted over with masonry paint? I have a few patches of render which need sealing before winter but wanted to paint the exterior walls next year .. or is it the case that paint cannot be used over sbr as it contains silicone?.. if so, I could paint the patches (and parts of walls I can reach after first wire brushing the lose paint off) then wait for better weather next year to seal over the masonry paint..is that a better idea?
UPDATE : Thanks very much for the helpful replies!..I have since found out that you can mix up a slurry concrete mix which includes the sbr in a ratio of 5 litres to 25kgs of cement..slap this over the old paintwork and patches then this CAN be painted over (I`ll do it next year!) sbr makes the cement more weather proof but the cement enables the sbr to be painted over..hope Ive got that right anyway!

Jesus some ridiculous answers. Been a plasterer /damproofer for 28 years and yes you can use SBR and Paint over it but will need to give a sand or LIGHT wire brush to help adhesion. I just painted a whole house today to seal it It and paint tomorrow. It's a LATEX not silicone (
In fact more rubber if you look at chemical composition). Seriously how some builders get work is beyond me with these answers.
Hi- i would try and avoid using a silicone based sealent as most of them are not great to paint over. I would rather use a decorators caulk and then paint over that. If the cracks in the middle of the walls then I would dig them out and use a proper masonry filler as caulk will stand out. Tou pret is a great masonry filler as cement based and can be rubbed down. I would repair what is needed, fill it and then apply a watered down coat of masonry paint to seal it and then leave it until you are ready to paint all of it if you don’t want to do that now. Avoid a silicone base material as it can’t be painted over I would just sand the areas down and use a good quality sandex exterior paint then do the whole job when the weather gets better

Should be ok to overpaint SBR with masonry paint. For extra certainty use a render bonding agent such as Sika Rendagrip as a priming coat
