Ceiling Crack- GRP / Fiberglass installation on top of existing Loft conversion room.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

Hi, We are getting reroofing done for a semi-detached house. A Roofer is installing a GRP / Fibreglass roof ( previously felt ) on top an existing loft conversion room since yesterday. I have just noticed a crack in the ceiling and it has started to worry me - Please see the images attached using below link https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ngSV9hQSDk2gjx1QS4s7B5v07xK1Kt0w/view?usp=sharing Is it something to worry about? - If it is what are my options? Many thanks.

Unfortunately this can happen with the weight of a few people on the flat roof combined with the movement of leverage to remove existing felt. Once the roof has been finished fill the crack and paint it.

Hi there, without looking at the job I can only say in my opinion if there is no water dripping through into bedroom it might be because the timber joist are not deep enough for the span of the room therefore as the workmen have been working on roof the ceiling joints could have sunk a little bit therefore causing the crack along the plaster board joint. I hope this helps thanks Andy

I never like to see artex because its normally hiding sins . It looks like there is no joining tape when the boards where laid or the lack of noggins . With all the work going on it would not be unusual to see movement especially if its in the center of the room.

Looking at your photos it looks like the joining of the boards .put in some plaster board Niles as the roof joist should be on that point use a filler over the Niles then paint ..probably disturb when stripping off existing roof .plus artex celing is heaver than skim celing
