Sound proofing child’s bedroom.
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.27 PM
My toddler is going through some sleep problems, on the odd night he can wake a couple of times. When this happens my lovely neighbour thumps on the wall to clearly signal that we’ve woken him up. The bedroom is a box room, rough guess of 6m2. How much would it roughly cost in total to soundproof this room? This would also help to reduce the need to creep around the house when my son is in bed. The house is a typical 1930’s ex council House. Any help would be appreciated.

The room size is too small to create an acoustic insulation system. Insulating with a Rockwood or similar sound blanket may have some effect but rather sounds u have a difficult neighbour that should think of changing their sleeping arrangements. Or move house yourselves.

Hi Abi, its worth understanding, there are two types of sound, impact sound and airborne sound. Why don't you ask the neighbour which type of sound is affecting them most, this will show them your treating the matter seriously, help build a basis dialogue and help you better understand their complaint. If its all about airborne sound there are products and systems available that will massively reduce the airborne sound penetration through the Party Wall. I am assuming its the horizontal passage where the problem lies?

Umm, well the size of the room could hinder this a bit but you could create a new dry wall on the problem wall 4-6'' deep and install 50mm rock wool slabs in-between the battens and then plasterboard it.
Same happened to a friend of mine and they did this and no more complaints but you will lose space in the room.
Other than this and above, hang a really heavy lined curtain from the ceiling leaving a 3-4'' gap from the wall would help, what we do in the studio to deaden the drums a bit, cheapest method.
I do hope one of these will work for you it's not nice what you are going through
All the best
If I can help further let me know

Realistically the only way to insulate the wall would be to build a false wall and fit some acoustic insulation roll between the timbers. Personally I think this is a big expense and time consuming for a problem which hopefully will not last too long. Not a problem at all if you have understanding neighbours
