Insulation

Cold bathroom above new garage extension

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

We had a new extension built and the bathroom above the garage is always cold, a good few degrees lower than the rest of upstairs! The radiator BTU was sufficient for the size of the room! The garage ceiling has rock wool between the rafters and overlaid with 100mm kingspan and then boarded and skimmed. The doors are wood and have wether seals around the edges. All walls have rock wool and again boarded and skimmed. The bathroom is to all regs so insulated all round What more can I do?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi rich, sounds like the floor and walls are insulated properly. Most heat does escape through the ceiling and being a bathroom I would imagine you might have spotlights. Some sparkys have a habit of throwing all of the ceiling insulation out of the way to fit spotlights and it never quite makes it back into position. Best to check that first as its the only easy fix . With low wat led spots you can fit a cage over them and fully insulate the ceiling without the risk of them overheating. Also make sure the insulation is right down into the corners of the roof space.

‘Up to Building regs’ does not mean anything unfortunately. The easiest is to have a look at it with a thermal camera, you’ll spot the problems straight away.

Well the answers above all make sense, and the thermal imaging is definitely the way ahead to spot cold spots. Any kind of gap or poorly fitted insulation will cause problems with cold, 3 cold walls hard to keep warm. Have you thought about under floor heating mats for wooden floors a bit of messing about but would up the temperature in the room for sure. I hope we have helped you Rich

I like the previous guys assessment but it is difficult to say without surveying. I just wondered if the bathroom is the same size footprint as the garage below? Is the garage an unheated space? are the walls of the garage at ground level insulated because a lot are not, in which case cold bridging could be occurring from the uninsulated structure below, particularly from the internal wall skin bypassing the first floor cavity insulation. I would check to ensure the Garage walls are either cavity construction or solid and that they are properly insulated from the cold on the inside of the garage. best of luck with that one.
