Do any plumbers know what an intermittent whaling sound from combi boiler when in heating mode?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

My valiant combi boiler makes an intermittent whaling noise every 20 seconds or so when boiler is in heating mode. It stops when the set thermostat temperature is reached and maintained. I noticed that during the whaling noise (which lasts about 5 seconds) if I open a hot tap or adjust a radiator thermostat it stops the whaling sound temporarily. It started earlier thus year after getting a new line + radiator fitted along with swopping some other radiators with new ones, haven’t had the heating on since May so not be an issue till now. Any ideas for a fix / idea of cost to fix most welcome? Thanks in advance.

It is due to imbalance in the burner settings, according to my gas contractor. I had this problem a few weeks back and he sorted it out on the service. He's called ATS Heating, Daniel.

You say you have had some work done to the system, some times dirt in the boiler can cause this noise you will need a system clean and flush if this is the cause.

A whaling or whistling sound is more related to kettling which is one of the heat exchangers being too hot. This is basically overheating and as above the system needs to be clean, in this case a system clean and secondary heater replacement/clean.
