Filling loop and expansion vessel repair, or new boiler?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

I have an old vallant ecomax 828e ( installed around 2000 ) recently serviced. It is situated in the loft space on the back wall. My understanding is that the expansion vessel is hard to get to and therefore replacing this would be labour intensive since the boiler will need to be removed to do this work. Despite its age and the repairs required the boiler itself is in general good health. Should I just replace the boiler or undetake the repairs to get a few more years out of it? What would be the cost of any such undertakings - grateful for any advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You do not have to remove the boiler to replace the expansion vessel especially with a Worcester Bosch, it is a small job and if the expansion vessel was difficult to remove then if you have the space which it sounds you have I would leave the faulty one in place and install a new external on on the heating primary pipework

Cheapest and quickest would be to install external expansion vessel on CH pipework. Materials ~£40-£50 and couple of hours work for plumber depending on pipework accessibility. ecoMAX boilers incorporate a 10 litre expansion vessel which is suitable for a sealed heating system with a maximum water content of 100 litres. Therefore your new vessel should be 10L+

For Boiler of 19 years of age, you may start thinking of replacing the boiler, as it is not worth investing money in an old Boiler. A new boiler will be more economical to run and if you get a good boiler installed by a registered installer, you can get 10 years warranty after the installation and you will save yourself a lot of trouble and money. However, if you still want to repair it, just install an external expansion vessel which will do the job ( no need to get the boiler off the wall) , until you decide the replacement of the Boiler. It is not a very big job and can be done in couple of hours, this can give you time to choose a new Boiler and to get quotes for new installation...
