Do I need an electrician?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.05 PM

Hi, I have an ex-council end terraced house and I am planning to decorate the kitchen and the upstairs landing where I’ll be installing downlights into a false/dropped ceiling(probably timber framed with plasterboard). I understand that the kitchen falls into the notifiable job category by being a special room and need certified by an electrician but how about the landing? I am first time homeowner and not really sure what the procedure is when it comes to works like this? Should I apply for building warrant or the electrician would sort it out? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Since 2013 kitchens are no longer a "special location" under part P of the building regulations. This removes the need to notify building control, HOWEVER you should still have a minor works certificate for even non notifiable electrical work to prove that it has been competently completed. Best advice is to get an electrican who's registered with one of the industry bodies (Stroma, Napit, NiC EiC etc) who can issue the certificate for your records. You may need them if you sell the house or sometimes insurers will want to see them.

Take note: Kitchen electrical work is covered by part p in wales and therefore you would need to notify building control. For the work outside of a kitchen or bathroom not covered by building control all you need is a minor works certificate which does not need to be provided by a registered electrician who is a member of one of industry bodies, but that person must be a competent person.

If it’s in wales it’s still classed as a special location if in England it’s not, always best to have a registered electrician to look at it

My interpretation of part P is that although kitchens are not special locations, modifying a circuit in the kitchen by adding a lighting point, fused connection or socket outlet is still notifiable. If in doubt, Google "Are kitchens notifiable under part P"
