I am having my house rewired & plastered, is this a good time to get a wired security alarm?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.04 PM

I am having my house rewired and plastered and would like to get a security alarm. Can security alarm wires put in the wall like other wiring to hide them from view?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Of course you can, provided you follow the recommendations about separation of low voltage cables and data/alarm cables. Personally, unless you have a very big house, I would not go for a wired alarm. Wired alarms are more expensive to install than wireless ones, and you don't have the flexibility of placing sensors where you want that a wireless alarm gives - you have to carefully plan their locations now. And of course, if in the future you want to add a new sensor, you might have to go for a wireless one unless you are OK to see cables running across the house.

Yes is the simple answer. Here's a few good tips that are often forgotten about until 2nd fix time when your decorating is finished so please do these to ensure no extra cables need to be run after the fact. Also its likely to be an electrician running cables who may not know specifics about alarms so pass on this info if that's the case. Use 8 core alarm cable to cover you for different wiring scenarios, run cat 5e or cat6 from your panel location to your broadband location (for ip connection to alarm), have an unswitched fused spur fitted where your alarm panel will be to power it and finally to avoid further small chases and patching have the cables come out of the walls exactly where you will have your pirs, detectors etc, instead of poking out of the ceiling in every room. I hope this all helps. You'll thank this post if you have to follow it.

Hi Yes this is a good time to run cables we always cap cables so you may plaster over the capping to protect cables. Depending on the cable runs we also would insert draw wire if we had to draw another cable through or you had a problem with the cable, normally we would do a cable test from end to end making sure all is in good working order

Yes cables can be hidden in the wall, wired alarms are also more reliable than wireless alarms.

We would always recommend to clients that if they have the desire for a hard wired house alarm and they are looking to have some kind of refurbishment, rewire or any type of renovation works its the optimum time to install such a system. may ass well deal with the drilling and dust in one fowl swoop not to mention ease of access for the tradesman minimising impact on the client and daily life. All the best !

Hard wired over wireless everytime. Be aware of distances between mains voltage and 12v cabling during installation and future proof wherever possible

Yes better doing cable runs now before walls and plaster go on that way all cables can be concealed once decor is done however this is part of a first fix job and is best done at similar time to electricians doing first cable runs but you will have to decide exactly what sensors you want and where now. Wireless alarms are now also very good and much more better quality than they used to be and these give you more flexibility on locations of sensors / outside sounders etc.

Wired alarm system, less maintenance and more secure as using cabled backbone.

Yes! Wireless is great however where possible get it hard wired. There are many ways to hide the alarm cables but its always easier while the house is being wired. Even if you just get the cables run you can have someone install the rest after the works have finished. Give your local installer a call. Many would be more than happy to pre wire.

Yes,first fixing cables before plastering to hide alarm cables would be a preferred option.

It would be the ideal time to get any cabling done. you would benefit from a site survey to see what is needed and where alternately fit a hybrid system which will give the option to add wireless devices at any time Andy

Most certainly. If you have an opportunity to have a wired alarm and can plaster after then 100% yes.

Yes this would be the best time to have your security system installed. You would be able to have the wirring hidden and the system installed without further disruption if you were to have it installed at a later date.
