Can I Knock Down This Faux Brick Wall Without Or Do I Need To Check Anything?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.04 PM

Hello, I am buying my first house and its a bit of a 'fixer upper'. In the kitchen is a horrendous faux brick wall: Can I just knock this down myself without any consideration? If not, who would I need to engage? What type of approximate cost could I be looking at? If I can do it myself, I assume I would want the ceiling artex tested for asbestos as knocking down the faux internal wall could disturb some of the ceiling etc? Thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I personally wouldn't just knock walls down without a proper inspection. I would say seek professional advice to make sure that it isn't load bearing. A structural engineer would be able to help and can advise you what you would need to put in place to support the weight if it was load bearing so could be fully removed. If the house is built befor 1980 I would also check the ceiling for asbestos as it was commonly used in artex.

Get a structural engineer in to be sure you don't knock down a load bearing wall. Always air on the side of caution.

A Faux brick wall is only a tile witch looks like bricks so it can be knocked of the wall with out affecting the artex ceiling. if the wall is holding anything above, where you want your new opening then you will have to invest in a steal beam so it can support the wall above. If you are uncertain about the ceiling I would have it tested to make sure it’s not asbestos.

You would need the wall Inspected to see if the joists need propping up before knocking the wall down also the artex ceilings would need to be tested for asbestos . Graham from Clearaway services
