Slow draining downstairs toilet and kitchen sink

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.04 PM

Hi Our downstairs toilet has started to drain slowly, I.e it fills up higher as if blocked and then drains slowly. The kitchen sink is also draining slowly. These both drain into the same manhole but have separate pipes going into the manhole. We thought they were both just blocked but I’ve put unblocker stuff down the kitchen sink and it’s still gurgling and slow to drain. With the toilet, when we take the inspection cap off the part of the soil pipe that’s outside the house, the toilet drains normally. So, does this sound like the manhole is probably blocked and full? (We’ve has a lot of rain recently) Or is there something weird going on with pressure? The downstairs toilet system also has an air admittance vent. I know the next step is to get a plumber in to look. I just wondered what could be the problem and potential solution. Thanks Carol

Hi Carol. Prehaps looks like a main drain block which can be seen under the manhole cover assuming you have one and that it is removable. You could ask the water board to check it which I think may be free of charge. If you are in a terrace property for instance it may not be your immediate location problem but further up the line... ask each next door how things are running for them. Hope this helps. Bob.

blocked drain, causing back pressure in drain, air admittance devices anti vac traps will not alleviate this as they only let air in and do not let air out,get your drains checked.

Sounds to me like airs getting trapped.maybe a air admitence valve is sticking .I would put an anti vac trap on the toilet basin and one on the kitchen sink .this should cure it
