Do I need permission to drill through external wall for my extractor fan?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.04 PM
Hi, I am the freeholder and currently living on the second floor. I would like to drill through the external wall to fit a extractor fan vent from my kitchen, which leads to a shared alleyway. Do I need permission to install and drill the vent? Can anybody show me a document or website link that states, that I dont need permission? Kind regards, Philip

Hi Philip,
the very informative website planninportal.gov.uk states:
"Fitting, altering or replacing an external flue, chimney, or soil and vent pipe is normally considered to be permitted development, not requiring planning consent".
Please note that different rules apply if you live in a listed building, in a flat or in a converted building, please check them on planningportal.gov.uk and with your local authority.
All the best.
