Roofline replacement- restore timber or cladding or upvc

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

Hi, I have bargeboard on roof that has started to rot and paint coming off, also have really bad roten softfits that requires to be repaired. Also guttering is very old and requires to be replaced. I have had several quotes from different roofers and they all provide different options :- 1) replace roten parts of timber on apex bargeboard then sand and paint it and replace gutters 2) remove the timber bargeboard, softfit, fascia and replace all with UPVC. 3) replace roten parts of timber on bargeboard and softfit/fascia and then cap with uPVC and install gutters on UPVC ? 4) is eaves protection system necessary ? I am confused on whether it's worth keeping the timber or replace it UPVC or cap it as I have researched internet and there is no definite answer on what's recommended. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would definitely replace all the wood and do not cap it as the timber will still rot behind the capping board if any of the timbers are rotten under the bargeboard then have that replaced

Replace with PVC or replace with wood. Do not cap it as the wood will still rot away underneath so the pvc won’t have a solid fix.

Yes rip off all the rotten wood and use tanalised timber to rebuild and then use eaves guard under your tiles and then use plastic cladding and guttering and fascia this is the right way to do it

All depends on your budget?number 3 is the most sensible option as long as all rotten wood is replaced capping shouldn't be a problem.eave trays are optional but if the eave felt is in poor condition witch it normaly is on old builds ie bituman felt then I would definitely recommend.
