HOLES IN BRICK WALL AND REFILLING/REPAIRING EXPANSION GAP ON EXTERNAL HOUSE WALL

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

I have moved to a new house and the previous owner has made lots of drill holes in the bricks of the front external wall where he had been trying to fit grab rails etc. I would like to fill them to protect from ingress of insects, rain etc. What is the best filler to use please? Was also thinking about getting a matching brick to drill and use the drill dust to disguise the filler/blend in? Secondly, the external wall expansion gap filler needs replaced as it’s crumbling and missing in parts of the gap. What product do I use for this please? Hoping some experienced bricklayers can help with some advice please? Thanks.

Dear meerykat, My opinion on your problem would be to remove the bricks where the wholes are and fill back up with a new brick so the whole is completely filled and the problem of insects intruding the home will be near to none. For your second query it’d best to use would be a waterproof sealant first followed by a silicone finish. Making sure that all dust and old mortar is removed.

Hello Meerycat As the holes in the bricks are only drill holes mix up a small amount of mortar and add some mortar colour to match the bricks ( whatever you do dont go knocking the bricks out you'll give yourself a whole load of work matching mortar joints etc ) For the expansion joint buy a matching sealant PJ :-)

Remove the bricks with hole and use mortar to relay them and joint them with mortar or fill holes with a cement and blend the colour in

Two ways 1 remove drilled bricks and replace with new. Or 2 you could just fill the holes in with cement and blow brick dust over it to disguise them. In my opinion ither way would work fine
