How to fix a sloped hedge
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
Hi, is there any way to fix my hedge? It used to be even all the way across, but it grew beyond arms reach, so we had a company come in and cut it. They were supposed to reduce the height by 50% but instead decided to put a slope in do its twice the height on one side than the other. I can’t reduce it to the lower height but I need to reduce the height if the higher side. But because of the line they’ve used, it’s currently flat. I’m not sure how to put in a new line without making it look worse

After reading your question there is certainly a way to fix your hedge.
You did not mentioned this but I want to believe your land where the hedge is it’s sloped, if that’s the case, then you should of said to the company that you want the hedge reduce to 50% but you would like it to be even all the way across on top. I say this because your instruction to the company was to reduce the height by 50% but you didn’t mention the top being level or even and the company should of asked you how you would like the top to be. Was just a matter of miscommunication on your part and the company not taking the initiative to ask the right questions to ensure they fully understand what you wanted.
If you reduce a hedge on a slope 50% on both sides then you will end up with a sloped hedge.
MY SOLUTION: (You may need another person to check the line level before you make final tie) Measure the hedge on the higher end of the slope to 50%. Put a temporary stake in the ground to that height and tie a string on it. Pull the string to the lower end of the slope then place a line level on the string in the middle. Put another stake at the lower end of the hedge, ensuring the stake is to the height where the line is now level. You may need to put more stakes dependant on the length of the hedge. Pull the string firm and tie off. Now you are ready to cut your hedge 50% and at the same time it will be even all the way across.
However, if the slope is severe, you may not want to keep the hedge level, making it take on unmanageable heights at the bottom of the hill. Sometimes a compromise is necessary to trick the eye into seeing level while actually conforming slightly to the contours of the land.
Water carefully, and as soon as new shoots are evident, apply a nitrogen-rich fertiliser to feed the emerging foliage. Soon if looked woody after cutting will be once again clothed in verdant green and as shapely as can be.

Depending on what type of hedge it is, if it’s privit this can be vigorously cut and it will grow back to how you want it, if the hedge is coniferous it can be cut to what ever size you like just trim the front and back not taking too much off it, the middle will take some time to come back but thıs is how to straighten the hedge.
