Can you have a triple spur (daisy chained spur?)
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
An electrician has recently installed 2 separate double sockets from an existing spur in my property, which would make it a triple spur... I have been told it is on a radial circuit but it is NOT fused. The spurs will be for TV, games consoles, WiFi router, lamp etc. Is this just poor practice or an absolute no no? Thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Ok if it is all fused through a 13 amp Spur unit then you can have as many as you want, but limited to 13amp total. It must be off of a radial or a ring circuit as I can’t think of another type of power circuit. If it’s off of a radial though it’s fine.
Edit... so if it is on a radial it’s not a Spur at all. It’s just a continuation of the original radial circuit. The term ‘spur’ only applies if it is a ‘spur’ off of a ring circuit

Hey there, as others have said, you are permitted 1 power socket from an existing socket. If you have 2 or 3 sockets supplied from an existing socket then this is incorrect and bad practice. You are however permitted to have as many sockets as you wish if the new circuit supplying the sockets are protected by a 13A fused spur unit. This way you can never overload the cable as it is protected by theoretically by 13A.
Hope this helps

If it is off a radial circuit its fine, if its off a ring final circuit (32A) then it is wrong. I cant see that any electrician who knows what he is doing would do this

I’d say it is very bad practice particularly if it is from a ring final circuit. You can have one socket spur off of each socket on a ring main. Best bet would be install a 13amp fused spur from existing socket and then work from there.

Any spurs off the main circuit should be fused to 13amp and be run in 1.5 cable as per regulations, due to the fuse, load and taking into account diversity values you can not connect as many as you like
