Barn conversion wall insulation

The usual way of doing this is to cut celotex or similar insulating board to go between the existing timbers. Trouble is that the timbers are irregularly shaped and getting a good fit is tricky, this can be dealt with by spraying foam insulating material around the gaps. Unfortunately this isn't always done which renders the insulation useless and many barn conversions are cold and draughty. Possibly the best way to do it would be from the outside - create a fully insulated box around the building with weather boarding on top. However this would change the dimensions of the building and planning permission might be required. Yes, a breathable membrane would be required. Also note that depending on construction details you might be able to plaster board(use foil backed) onto the timbers from the outside before fitting celotex etc. This can save a lot of time - similar method can be used on top of the rafters: plaster board, celotex, membrane, battens and tiles. Really depends on how flat the timbers are. Good luck with the project.

This all depends if the barn is listed you need to seek proper advice from a architect who is registered in this kind of conversion

There is a spray foam product companies are now using & it's breathable so will fit any size gap however irregular in shape, once sprayed it rapidly expands & is then sawn off flush with the timber studs etc. Hope this maybe of help.

Hi you can fit insulation on the internal walls. Obviously I would need to know the internal construction at present But you can fit insulated plaster boards As one choice or celotex sheets then baton and over boarding Regards Paul
